1) NM3230: Digital Storytelling
For one of our individual assignments, we were tasked to create a short film based on the topic "A day in the life".
My final video is titled "The Golden Respite".
Outline of the Story
M – the protagonist – is a typical NUS student. Every day, he goes through the motions of his boring schedule. He wakes up just in time for class, sits in his tutorials which he barely comprehends and attends judo trainings that do more harm on his body than good. To make matters worse, he must restrict his diet to make weight for the upcoming judo competition. But everything changes when it's a Friday because he gets one cheat meal. A long as he gets his hands on his favourite dessert – the Golden Cup from Nine Fresh, everything will be just a little bit better.
Visual Treatment
Taking inspiration from The Office, I want the camera work to feel spontaneous as though I’m not sure what M – the protagonist – is going to do next. My rationale for this is to make the film feel more raw and authentic to viewers, as though it is a real unscripted day in M’s life. This works well with another feature of the show where all characters are aware of the camera. Integrating this into my film, there will be some scenes where I interact with M behind the camera, seemingly becoming another character. For instance, I (the cameraperson) jostle M awake from his nap in class.
Example of an interaction between a character and camera.
Additionally, to maximise visual comedy, I want to try and incorporate camera movements that match M’s emotional state. For instance, zooming in for a close-up shot on M’s face after he realises that there is an in-class quiz he did not know about and was completely unprepared for. Zooming in from a wider angle shot contributes to the unscripted and natural feel of the film as though specific events of interest occur spontaneously.

Majority of the dialogue shots in the film will be medium shots, framing M from the waist up. This allows the viewers to focus on M’s facial expressions, body language and surrounding activities.

2) NM2220: Introduction to Media Writing
For one of our individual assignments, we were tasked to produce a feature story for a student-run publication at NUS. We were also allowed to produce a video or infographic to complement our feature story.
I wrote a feature story on the student club - NUS Judo where `I cover their challenging journey leading up to the annual Inter Tertiary Competition. The feature story and accompanying video shows how the club members have pushed through despite the numerous obstacles they have faced.
